A portion of the award will also support the new QuestKids Academy, a private school that opened in August 2009 for elementary-aged children on the autism spectrum or with other learning and behavior concerns. Funds will support educational materials, curriculum resources and cultivation of the academy. One of the school’s four classrooms will be named after The Galloway Foundation. Since 1996, QuestKids has specialized in helping children with autism spectrum disorders, pervasive developmental disorder and other learning and behavior concerns with individualized one-on-one programs. The more than 50 children served by QuestKids each year receive intensive instruction in language, self-care, social skills, academics and decision-making. Without adequate treatment, some children with these disorders may remain dependent on their caregivers and lack the basic life skills and self-esteem needed for daily functioning. Instead, the therapy provided at QuestKids enables most children to reach their personal goals, require fewer support services later in childhood and be more independent throughout their lives.
